Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL)
Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL) is a US based non-profit organization that has been promoting ecological sanitation in Haiti since 2006 (www.oursoil.org). We are currently treating over 20,000 gallons per week of human waste at composting sites in Cite Soleil and Limonade and are providing both sanitation services in the form of household toilets (EkoLakay), communal toilets, and pay-for-service mobile toilets (EkoMobil). We are a small organization focused on the quality of our work and committed to developing innovative sanitation solutions in Haiti. We are also committed to conducting rigorous research on novel sustainable sanitation technologies to be passed on to the Haitian government and private sector.
SOIL is currently seeking a full time Regional Director for our Port au Prince office. As this is a supervisory role it would likely be preceded by a month long consultancy/trial period to get a better sense of the candidates competencies and to develop relationships with the team. The job description for the one month consultancy/trial will be developed in collaboration with yourself and current directors and will be tailored to your skill set.
We envision the Port au Prince office launching a household toilet business (EkoLakay) towards the end of 2014 that will be based on lessons learned from the ongoing EkoLakay pilot in the northern city of Cap-Haitien. In addition, the Port-au-Prince office will continue to function as a hub for research and development in the sustainable sanitation. We currently have an excellent infrastructure for composting and agricultural testing and we would like to encourage new research of our existing projects and testing of innovative new projects (such as the composting of latrine waste and land rehabilitation using SOIL compost). We are looking for someone who is ultimately interested in becoming a part of the SOIL family and contributing to our long-term vision by putting in place systems for operations, data management, research and outreach.
We are seeking a candidate with the following qualities:
• Love for Haiti
• Respect for co-workers
SOIL Haiti
• Experience in management
• Experience in WASH, especially sustainable sanitation technologies
• Experience in business development
• Experience with preparing reports for funders
• Experience in preparing and managing budgets
• Computer literacy
• Fluency in Kreyol (the primary language used within the organization), French and English
• Ability to commit to a timeframe of 1 year minimum, but 2-3 years desirable
As Regional Director you will be responsible for the following:
• Working with community sanitation committees, school directors and community leaders to promote the concept of ecological sanitation to the wider communities in which SOIL will be establishing projects.
• Collaborating with Project Managers to develop educational materials and techniques and to provide educational outreach events in all of the sites where SOIL has projects.
• Collaborating with Project Managers and the Executive Director on developing and implementing all possible consultancy work for other international organizations in Haiti.
• Supervising all Port au Prince employees to ensure that they are meeting their job requirements and being treated fairly and respectfully by the organization.
• Leading general staff meetings once per month and meetings with Project Managers as needed.
• Reviewing weekly and monthly reporting by all staff and conveying relevant information to the Executive Director.
• Reviewing and approving all Project Manager budgets and weekly plans to ensure maximum efficiency and coordination within each department.
• Supervising and monitoring dropbox folders related to operations.
• Ensuring that there are clear job descriptions for all national employees represented in the Port au Prince organogram in collaboration with the Executive Director and Cap Haitien Regional Director.
• Staying in close contact with the Regional Director in Cap Haitien to ensure that lessons learned in the two offices are shared.
• Resolving interpersonal conflicts among staff members in partnership with the Deputy Regional Director.
• Coordinating with other international agencies and the WASH cluster to ensure SOIL’s activities are transparent and carried out in the spirit of collaboration.
• Preparing narrative reports for funders.
• Submitting monthly progress reports to the Executive Director, including recommendations for improving operations.
