Afghanistan’s forests cover 2.8% of its land 1.78 million hectares. In Khost province, forests are vital for people, livestock, and biodiversity. However, deforestation and overuse threaten 120,000 hectares of forest, risking severe degradation. To address this, FAO, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), established nine Rangeland and Forest Management Associations in Baak, Sabari, and Zazi Maidan districts. To improve livelihoods and reduce forest pressure, FAO planted nearly 48,000 fruit saplings (almond, peach, cherry, orange) across 232 hectares. Additionally, 260,000 walnut, pine nut, and pine saplings were planted on 2,111 hectares of degraded forest. These efforts aim to restore biodiversity, secure water sources, and promote sustainable land use.
