Burkina Faso: Social Scientist (Regional Researcher)

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for a Social Scientist (Regional Researcher) who will lead and undertake innovative research on the social, institutional and policy dimensions of irrigation and agricultural water management, with the aim of improving food and nutrition security, rural incomes and the environment in Burkina Faso and other countries in West Africa. The person will work closely with other researchers and contribute social science expertise to other projects in West Africa, particularly in Francophone countries.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- design and manage social science research projects, particularly in Burkina Faso and in West Africa as a whole.
- This could include the political economy of water investments, national or transboundary basin management, and institutional and governance issues in irrigation and agricultural water management at different levels in West Africa;
- contribute to interdisciplinary research projects involving hydrologists, agricultural water management researchers, agronomists, economists and environmental scientists at IWMI’s West Africa Office; and
- Prepare research reports, journal articles, conference papers and other scientific manuscripts for the dissemination of research results.
Qualifications:
- a PhD in sociology, geography, political science or another relevant discipline;
- a minimum of 2 years of postdoctoral experience in irrigation, agricultural water or natural resource management in a developing country;
- a clear understanding of development challenges, especially in relation to poverty alleviation and food security;
- strong client orientation and commitment to demand-driven research that supports decision making and delivery of outcomes;
- strong communication skills in written and oral English and French, including the capacity to write proposals, reports and academic papers, and to communicate research results to stakeholders at different levels; and
- The ability to liaise with key donor agencies.
