Iraq: Shelter and WASH Specialists

Danish Refugee Council is urgently seeking key staff for our current operation and emergency scale-up in the Kurdish (KRI) and Central Regions of Iraq - two of the most challenging humanitarian settings worldwide.   

Danish Refugee Council is a leading protection agency pursuing our mandate to protect and promote durable solutions to displacement affected populations on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), DRC apply a regional approach with operational presence in Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Turkey and Iraq.

Being operational in Iraq since 2003, DRC is today operational in the Kurdish governorates, in and around Baghdad and in South Central. Focused both on the influx of Syrian refugees and the current IDP crisis, DRC is providing assistance in a range of sectors including CCCM, Protection, Livelihoods, Emergency Response (including food security, cash, and NFIs), WASH and Shelter. 

The Iraq programme presently employs 160 national staff and 17 international staff, but is expanding in responds to the current emergency through funding from ECHO, DFID, USAID, UN, DANIDA, Sida etc.


Duties and Responsibilities:


As Shelter and Wash Advisor your will provide technical input related to physical planning, site selection/development, infrastructure and shelter with due consideration to water, sanitation and environmental concerns to the operation. And more specifically you will also:

  • Integrate and lmplement partners and other agencies involved in assisting persons.
  • Work with the design and formulation of activities in line with cost-effectiveness, technologically sound and socially appropriate solutions for the above mentioned activities. Design and supervise shelter and infrastructure construction activities undertaken by DRC in the IDP and/or refugee camps and other identified locations.
  • Assess the needs and resources of refugees in terms of shelter with participation of the community and taking into consideration national policy and cluster standards and in defining appropriate solutions.
  • Provide inputs for formulation of project submissions to address the needs, taking into consideration the technical standards (UNHCR/Sphere/National) and DRC’s protection mandate and policy priorities, such as environment, women and children, groups with specific needs etc. 
  • Undertake the identification and/or extension of IDP hosting sites and plan for the development of appropriate infrastructure (including WASH infrastructure) in consultation with the national and local authorities and following UNHCR standards and policies.
  • Provide technical guidance and supervision in camp/site construction and related activities.  This includes developing standard designs for  shelter and providing technical details on layout of camp sites and other areas hosting IDPs.   
  • Liaise with UN agencies, Government ministries and implementing partners in order to coordinate activities encompassing camp/site planning, shelter and other infrastructures including roads, culverts in the camps.
