Researcher - Conflict Mapping

IPIS is recruiting a researcher on Conflict Mapping, starting in June 2014. This is a 90% FTE permanent contract. Based in the IPIS office in Antwerp, you carry out research projects on issues related to peace and development in Sub-Saharan Africa. You disseminate structured information and analysis through reports and presentations. You will specifically focus on research that makes use of the IPIS conflict mapping method. In addition to the research itself, you will actively look for new research projects.

Position in the organisation: you work in the research team and receive assignments from and report to the director.

Result areas:

· Deliver structured information and analysis based on desk and field research

· Collect data to prepare the publication of digital and interactive maps

· Secure project funding to ensure the continuity of IPIS’ research projects

· Perform administrative tasks as needed

Requirements:

· Master’s degree

· Knowledge of international relations and peace and conflict issues

· Excellent verbal and written command of English and a good working knowledge of French

· A minimum of 1 – 3 years of professional experience

· Field experience in Sub-Saharan Africa and willingness to travel to the region to conduct field research

· Flexible team player with good communication skills who has demonstrated the ability to work under stress and in difficult circumstances. You take initiative. You are a good writer and a methodical worker

· Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills

Additional skills:

· Network of local and international contacts in Sub-Saharan Africa

· Knowledge of other relevant languages

· Though IPIS is not recruiting a cartographer, knowlegde of GIS applications is an important asset

Selection process: Please send a recent CV, cover letter and one short writing sample pertaining to conflict issues in the region (in English, French or Dutch) to vacatures@ipisresearch.be before Thursday 01/05/2014. In the cover letter you briefly propose your own ideas for two future IPIS reports relating to conflict in Sub-Saharan Africa and briefly describe how you would research them.

The first selection will be made on the basis of your profile and the article. If you are selected, you will be invited to participate in a written home-based test. The test will be organised between 07/05 and 12/05. Please note, only candidates selected for further consideration will be contacted.

The candidates with the highest scores in this test will be invited for an interview at our offices or via Skype, in the second half of May
